The colonial powers had navies that ruled the oceans. Nationalism grew as the various countries obtained valuable raw materials in countries that were unable to protect themselves. As the nations of european powers grew stronger their empires began to grow until some such as england and france had mive empires in Africa and the middle east along with the indian sub-continent.
