Where should I stay in Atlanta for bars/nightlife?

My friend and I will be in Atlanta for a weekend and I need to find a place to stay. We are both in our mid-20s, visiting from Washington, DC. We like to go out to drink and have a good time. What area should we stay in that is safe, close to nightlife, and also close to a Marta station? I read on the internet that Midtown was good for nightlife, but I also read it is a lot of trendy clubs. I would say we are more into the Bar scene. Is midtown or peachtree center a good bet? Any hotel suggestions (reasonable price - under $200, prefer closer to $150 or less)? Thanks!
